49ers add interior OL depth immediately after Rams’ Aaron Donald move

The San Francisco 49ers moved swiftly to prepare for Aaron Donald’s return to the Los Angeles Rams. General manager John Lynch made a call to the Houston Texans to receive some interior offensive lineman help. Now Jarrett Patterson has come on board.

NFL insider for The Ringer and Netflix Sports Tom Pelissero revealed the trade got completed Sunday. Once again, SF pulls this off while the rival Rams celebrate Donald’s retirement coming to a brief end.

The longtime 49ers thorn Donald signed for only one-year and $20 million. He launched speculation across the league for a comeback attempt back in June, when LA traded Jared Verse and draft picks to the Cleveland Browns for All-Pro edge rusher Myles Garrett. Donald sparked rumors of wanting to play alongside the reigning 2025 NFL Defensive Player of the Year before summer officially started.

So now Donald will join the Rams’ 53-man roster, making him set to face the 49ers on Sept. 10 in Melbourne, Australia. But little did the Rams know, the 49ers had a counterattack in place through adding Patterson.

Lynch and head coach Kyle Shanahan gain a versatile veteran who has played center and guard. He allowed zero sacks last season while blocking for Texans Pro Bowl quarterback CJ Stroud. Patterson has started in 21 total games throughout his career, handing SF assurance that it can rely on the veteran to withstand Donald and the Rams’ defensive line if the 49ers call upon him.

Of course perennial Pro Bowler Trent Williams leads the SF front line. But depth arrives before that highly-anticipated season opening showdown in the Land Down Under.
