Packers trade for Steelers RB with Josh Jacobs suspension looming

The Green Bay Packers are currently dealing with the prospect of a looming suspension for running back Josh Jacobs ahead of the new season. While no such news has been announced yet, the team knows it is a possibility after his arrest in May on battery and other charges.

Now, seemingly in preparation for that to happen, the Packers have made a big move in the trade market.

“Trade: The Steelers are trading running back Kaleb Johnson to the Packers,” reported NFL insider Jeremy Fowler of ESPN on X, formerly Twitter.

Johnson was a third-round pick of the Steelers in 2025 out of Iowa and had some moments for Pittsburgh during his first season in the NFL, although he did make a huge blunder in an early-season game against the Seattle Seahawks, allowing the Seahawks to score on their own kickoff due to the gaffe.

At this point, no reporting has come out on what the Packers gave up to get Johnson from Pittsburgh.

Meanwhile, Jacobs is one of the better running backs in the league when on the field, but the Packers are clearly prepared to play at least some of the upcoming season without him in 2026. The Atlanta Falcons already saw pass rusher James Pearce Jr. suspended for eight games following his own arrest on domestic violence and other charges, although Jacobs’ charges have since been reduced to a misdemeanor.

In any case, the Packers will kick off their new season on September 13 with a road game vs the Minnesota Vikings.
