Ex-NFL player drops NSFW take on Texas Tech QB Brendan Sorsby ruling
In the hours since Texas Tech quarterback Brendan Sorsby was ruled eligible to play in the 2026 season despite previously gambling on college sports, just about everyone has been letting their takes fly.
Most of these takes are not in support of Sorsby or the ruling, which sets a pretty dangerous precedent regarding sports gambling in college football and college sports as a whole.
On Monday, former NFL defensive back Darius Butler sounded off about the ruling in a spirited rant on The Pat McAfee Show.
"We talk about the integrity of the game so much..
In my opinion this is absolute bullshit"@DariusJButler #PMSLive https://t.co/QKUuK7UmIH pic.twitter.com/Bqmtw4e9W3

“We talk about the integrity of the game so much and obviously you have different violations, but the main thing that we were most afraid of was gambling,” Butler said. “It was something we would never even think of getting into in that locker room. … To me, in my opinion this is bulls**t. This is absolute bulls**t. Now do I want the kid to be able to play football? Do I want his entire future to be ruined? No. But to set this precedent for guys in that locker room doing this type of s**t is definitely bulls**t.”
Butler’s sentiment has been echoed by many pundits and even by the NCAA. People are stunned that Sorsby is going to be allowed to play despite his gambling history, something that has been a big no-no in all sports over the years.
The fear is that this ruling may open a can of worms that is very difficult to close in the NCAA. If someone can bet on their own team and face very little punishment, what’s stopping others from taking it even a step further? Sorsby is expected to serve a two-game suspension, but that is hardly going to deter others in a similar situation.
Regardless, the discourse around Sorsby, his eligibility and the situation as a whole will continue to follow this Texas Tech team into the season and all throughout the fall. Even with the harsh reaction from many on Monday, it’s likely that the worst of it is still to come.
