ESPN analysts suggests 2 ‘interesting choices’ to fix biggest Patriots’ roster hole

With the New England Patriots surrounded by talk with Mike Vrabel and Dianna Russini, with the drama and rumors around all of it, the team’s sole focus is on improving off a successful season. As the Patriots look to improve after a Super Bowl appearance, the team is looking to fill in the biggest hole on the roster, as this analyst has an opinion on the matter.

According to Aaron Schatz of ESPN, the most dire need for New England is depth at the cornerback spot behind stars like Christian Gonzalez, Carlton Davis, and Marcus Jones. Schatz would label “interesting choices” such as Rasul Douglas and Adoree Jackson.

“No starting position is a problem for the defending AFC champions, but there are areas where depth could use bolstering. Cornerback stands out behind starters Christian Gonzalez, Carlton Davis III, and Marcus Jones,” Schatz wrote.

Veterans such as Adoree’ Jackson and Rasul Douglas would be interesting choices for depth,” Schatz continued.

A look at who the Patriots have at cornerback behind the starters

While Jackson and Douglas have logged productive seasons for many teams in the NFL throughout their careers, they could easily do the same for the Patriots in the 2026 season. Looking at the options at cornerback depth already, Schatz takes a look at why it needs some boost, with players like Kindle Vildor, Karon Prunty, and Charles Woods already on the team.

“The top backup is Kindle Vildor, who is on his sixth roster since 2022,” Schatz wrote. “Vildor has played only 23% of defensive snaps in games where he was active over the past two seasons. Fifth-round rookie Karon Prunty was seen as a reach by consensus boards, and Scouts Inc. didn’t even rank him among their top 300 players for this year’s draft. Charles Woods, the backup nickel, played 117 snaps for the Patriots last season.”

At any rate, it remains to be seen how New England addresses the depth at cornerback with the team looking to build off of last season after winning the AFC East at a 14-3 record and reaching the Super Bowl, until they lost to the Seattle Seahawks.
