Eliot Wolf breaks silence on Christian Gonzalez contract negotiations during Eagles preseason game
The New England Patriots are still in contract negotiations with Christian Gonzalez, and it’s uncertain when they’ll be able to get a deal done. During their preseason game against the Philadelphia Eagles, executive vice president of player personnel Eliot Wolf was asked about the status of those negotiations with their CB1, and it looks like they’re continuously working to get him locked up for the future.
“Each side is trying to do what’s right for them,” Wolf said. “Christian is a tremendous player that we’ve been on record multiple times saying we want him to be here, and that hasn’t changed. We’re going to continue working with his representation to try to get something done.”
Just a few days ago, ESPN’s Adam Schefter noted that both sides weren’t close to making a deal.
“I’m not so sure that the Christian Gonzalez deal is gonna get done so quickly,” Schefter said. “Obviously there’s a lot or parameters in place. And there’s the road map that Devon Witherspoon presented.”
“Up until this weekend the two sides weren’t overly close and they had not had a lot of productive conversations,” Schefter continued.
With Witherspoon getting his extension a few weeks ago, it wouldn’t be a surprise if Gonzalez was trying to get more than him. At the same time, the Patriots want to make sure they’re making the right deal, so they’ll probably take as much time as they can.
It doesn’t look like Gonzalez is holding out, but he is dealing with an injury that has kept him out of practice for some time. With a new contract looming, it’s in his best interest to lay low if he has an injury, and when he’s healthy again, it’ll be interesting to see if he suits up for the team.
