Phillies’ JT Realmuto struggles to define Andrew Painter’s MLB ceiling
The Philadelphia Phillies’ 12-3 victory came flying against the St. Louis Cardinals on Saturday night. Rookie pitcher Andrew Painter played a crucial part in the win and also won praise from the veterans on the team.
During the post-game media interaction, Phillies catcher JT Realmuto had a hard time defining Painter’s MLB ceiling. The All-Star catcher went on with lengthy praise for his young teammate and lauded his confidence.
“I could tell that was really important to him. The whole outing today, it looked like he was a dog on the mound. He wanted to get guys out; he wanted to attack the strike zone. He just looked really confident out there,” Realmuto said via Dave Uram of SPORTSRADIO 94WIP.

“It’s easy to forget how young he still is. So just the growth that we’ve seen out of him recently, and the guy we saw today – the ceiling is so high for him. When he has that demeanor and that much confidence on the mound, he can be whatever he wants in this game,” Realmuto added.
Painter has bounced back nicely in his return to the rotation after the Phillies were on the lookout to possibly trade him at the beginning of this month. Philadelphia even demoted him earlier this season in June after he was tagged in two innings for just six runs. He has only given up more than two runs once in five starts since rejoining the rotation.
Being a young player, he did lose some confidence, but none of that was visible in him during the latest action-packed game. During the Cardinals game, he pitched a career-high seven innings while allowing just a run and five hits without any walks. He struck out eight batters as well.
Earlier this month against the same Cardinals team, Painter equaled Cole Hamels’ 2006 record for being “the youngest pitcher to have a no-hitter through five innings.”
Next, the Phillies play the Cardinals again on Sunday, August 23, in front of their home crowd at Citizens Bank Park.
