Phillies’ Don Mattingly shares extremely insightful Trea Turner take

Don Mattingly provided solid insight into Trea Turner’s effectiveness as a star hitter following the Philadelphia Phillies’ matchup against the St. Louis Cardinals on Saturday afternoon.

Turner is going through the 12th season of his career in the majors, his fourth with the Phillies. At his best, he shines as one of the best hitters in the league as he boasts a World Series title to his name back from his stint with the Washington Nationals.

Turner’s batting average hasn’t been as efficient in past years, having his lowest average since his rookie campaign. Mattingly isn’t showing too much concern about the dip in his offensive production, looking forward to his resurgence.

“We haven’t really talked about getting him in the zone. We’ve really talked just about sticking with the game plan, being aggressive to that, and until you have to get outside of that. So that leads to like swinging at what you want, not just anything. I think Trea’s always been a little bit of chase. When he’s not feeling good, there’s more chase. When he’s feeling good, there’s less chase. And so usually it goes with how he’s feeling up there at that point,” Mattingly said, per reporter Colin Newby.

How Trea Turner, Phillies played against Cardinals

Trea Turner turned out with a solid performance to help the Phillies dominate the Cardinals by a 12-3 final score in Game 2.

Philadelphia outmatched St. Louis from start to finish. They jumped out to a 7-0 lead after three innings and never looked back, controlling the momentum in convincing fashion at home.

Philadelphia improved to a 72-58 record on the season, sitting at second place in the NL East Division standings. They are above the Miami Marlins and the Washington Nationals while trailing the Atlanta Braves.

Rolling with eight consecutive wins, the Phillies will look forward to their series finale against the Cardinals. That matchup commences on Aug. 23 as first pitch takes place at 1:35 p.m. ET.
