Rory McIlroy’s Wyndham Clark admission regarding BMW leader will catch fans’ attention

When the final round of the BMW Championship tees off Sunday afternoon, Rory McIlroy should have a chance to make a run at Wyndham Clark, the tournament leader.

Clark was brilliant in the third round, and he fired his second consecutive round of 6-under 64 to move to 17 under par through 54 holes. He will try to fend off McIlroy and Patrick Cantlay as both golfers are tied for second in the tournament with scores of 12 under par.

McIlroy got back into contention with an impressive performance on the back nine. He birdied five holes on the home half of the round to allow himself to have a shot at catching Clark.

After his round was completed, McIlroy sat down with CBS reporter Amanda Balionis and explained how impressed he was with Clark’s performance this season. While he said earlier in the week that he thought Scottie Scheffler was the PGA Tour’s player of the year, he thinks that Clark could enter the conversation with a victory in the BMW Championship.

“I said what I said earlier in the week about Scottie,” McIlroy said. “But if Wyndham can win here at the BMW, it’s a conversation that has to take place.”

It did not look like Clark was going to have a memorable round after the first hole. After going bogey-free through the first 36 holes, Clark sent his opening tee shot into the brutal rough at Bellerive Country Club in St. Louis. He hit his second shot into the rough on the opposite side of the fairway and had to settle for a double bogey 6. He would follow with six birdies and an eagle before closing his round with a bogey on the 18th hole.
