Spencer Rattler’s 100-yard pick-six has Saints fans grimacing
With the New Orleans Saints preparing in the preseason for the start of the regular season, the team’s exhibition matchup against the Los Angeles Rams on Saturday was another opportunity to see which quarterback could back up Tyler Shough. As the Saints offense will be led by Shough, it’s down to Zach Wilson and Spencer Rattler for the backup spot, with the latter showing on Saturday why he could end up being the third player on the depth chart.
Already down 20-o in the third quarter, Rattler had a chance to put points on the board with over nine minutes left to go in the period and the team deep in their red zone, but the 25-year-old would throw into traffic and get picked off. Worse yet, it was taken for a touchdown, resulting in a 100-yard pick-six.

On Friday, New Orleans head coach Kellen Moore would speak on the competition for the backup quarterback role behind Shough, with him saying that both Wilson and Rattler have been “playing some good ball,” per the team’s website.
“Just timing of the game, mix and match — we’ll just kind of talk through the rotations of everyone. Our focus was really this practice and then (Thursday) afternoon, we’ll kind of get into what’s the game is going to look like for everyone,” Moore said.
At any rate, it remains to be seen who ends up being the backup quarterback between Wilson and Rattler, as Week 1 for the Saints comes on Sept. 13 against the Detroit Lions. New Orleans is looking to improve after finishing with a 6-11 record, which put them last in the NFC South.
