Mercury’s Alyssa Thomas makes WNBA history with 5,000th career point

Thomas is going through the 13th season of her career in the league, her second with the Mercury. She shines as one of the best players in the league, often leading Phoenix to playoff appearances.

This season has been tough for the Mercury as the team is on pace to miss out on playoff action. That hasn’t stopped Thomas from adding new records to her resume, making a great achievement in Phoenix’s latest contest against Atlanta.

In 33 minutes of action, Thomas filled up the stat sheet. She finished with a triple-double of 11 points, 16 rebounds, 10 assists, and one steal. She shot 4-of-10 from the field and 3-of-5 from the free-throw line. Her efforts ended up being remarkable for the record books in WNBA history.

How Alyssa Thomas, Mercury played against Dream

Despite Alyssa Thomas’ historic efforts, the Mercury came up short in their 99-89 loss to the Dream at home.

Three players scored in double-digits for Phoenix in the loss, including Thomas. Kahleah Copper led the team with a stat line of 38 points, one rebound, one assist, and one steal. She shot 13-of-21 overall, including 3-of-7 from beyond the arc, and 9-of-12 from the charity stripe. DeWanna Bonner came next with 12 points and nine rebounds, while Noemie Brochant provided nine points and three steals.

Phoenix fell to a 13-24 record on the season, sitting at sixth place in the Western Conference standings. They are above the Los Angeles Sparks and the Seattle Storm at the moment.

The Mercury will look to bounce back in their next matchup, remaining at home. They host the Washington Mystics as tip-off takes place on Aug. 25 at 10 p.m. ET.
