Carson Steele becomes Eagles preseason legend with multiple Saquon Barkley-style hurdles

Heading into the Philadelphia Eagles preseason clash against the New England Patriots, few evaluators had Carson Steele’s name at the top of their watch lists.

Sure, Steele is a third-year NFL veteran who caught passes from Patrick Mahomes and was picked up by Howie Roseman all the way back in January on a reserve/future contract, but the Eagles have since added higher-profile players like Dameon Pierce in free agency and already have a pretty loaded running backs room, with Tank Bigsby and Will Shipley locked in behind Saquon Barkley.

And yet, after making multiple massive plays in incredibly dramatic fashion, Steele suddenly becomes a player to watch in the preseason finale, as he’s joined the likes of Henry Josey and Sam Bradford on the list of all-time Eagles preseason legends.

In the first half, Steele impressed in the passing game, taking an outlet screen pass from Tanner McKee well past the line of scrimmage, cutting back across the field and hurdling over cornerback Brandon Crossley in his pursuit of a first down.

Pretty impressive, right? Not quite on the level of Saquon Barkley’s reverse hurdle, but certainly flashy enough to make No. 26 smile. But then, a few quarters later, Steele did it again, jumping over reserve safety Eric Butler on a wheel route from McKee to score the go-ahead touchdown in the fourth.

Now granted, these are two preseason plays, and neither came against one of the Patriots’ starters, but after watching Philadelphia struggle to get much going against the Baltimore Ravens in Preseason Game 1, Steele provided a spark that was sorely needed on offense, finishing the game with 117 all-purpose yards, 84 as a receiver and 33 as a rusher.

Is there a spot on the 53-man roster for Steele? It’s hard to say, but if he can do a little blocking in two-RB sets, his versatility as a runner, a receiver, and a special-teamer may be enough to earn the final offensive spot over players like Pierce, Cameron Latu, and Elijah Moore as a Trey Burton-style Swiss Army knife.
