Why preseason star still faces uphill battle to make 53-man Eagles roster
The Philadelphia Eagles have a talented young running back, in Carson Steele. Steele has showed off his talent at training camp and in preseason games, but still has a battle ahead. It won’t be easy for him to make the team’s Week 1 roster.
“Philadelphia’s running back room is crowded. Saquon Barkley, Tank Bigsby and Will Shipley are in line to absorb almost all of the backfield’s touches in 2026. The Eagles could sneak Steele onto the roster as a fullback/tight end, but he has not been practicing as an H-back in training camp. He would be subject to waivers if the Eagles cut him. Can they get him on their practice squad?” The Athletic reported.
Steele is making a name for himself though in preseason games. He showed exactly why he is in the NFL, during a preseason game with the New England Patriots.
“Steele started his theatrics during a two-minute drill before halftime. He planted his foot on a route out of the backfield, hauled in a catch, then vaulted over Patriots cornerback Brandon Crossley to complete a 14-yard gain on what ended up being a touchdown drive. Steele then gave the Eagles a 21-17 lead with 3:46 left in the game by catching a wheel route along the right sideline and leaping over safety Eric Butler for a 20-yard score,” the outlet added.
Steele finished his night against the Patriots with six receptions, for 84 yards. He also had that touchdown catch. Steele went undrafted in the 2024 NFL Draft.
Time will tell if Steele can work his way onto the team’s roster. Philadelphia plays one final NFL preseason game on August 28, against the Cincinnati Bengals.
