Angel Reese’s career-high night also makes Dream history

The Atlanta Dream bounced back on Saturday night against the Phoenix Mercury. The victory came in large part thanks to Angel Reese’s historic 31-point performance. The 99-89 Atlanta win was Reese’s best WNBA scoring performance so far.

Reese also became the first player in Dream history to have 20 or more points and 10 or more rebounds ten times in a season. ESPNW’s official X, formerly Twitter, account celebrated the historic night with a social media post.

The LSU alum scored 31 points and added 14 rebounds, two assists and four steals all while going for 14-of-21 shooting from the field. The recent surge in her performance has been appreciated lately while she’s considered a legitimate contender for the WNBA Defensive Player of the Year.

“I think the Defensive Player of the Year is in Atlanta. One through three. One of us. So, you can check the stats, too,” Reese said, referring to herself, Rhyne Howard, and Jordin Canada.

And as Reese said, it won’t be a surprise if the DPOY comes to Atlanta.

The trio has been a linchpin to the Dream’s defensive brigade. They are ranked fourth in the WNBA with a 105.9 defensive rating and are allowing 85.8 points per game, per Basketball Reference. Additionally, the Dream lead the league in steals with 9.2 per game, per StatMuse.

Additionally, after winning the game against the Mercury, the Dream have also secured a WNBA playoff berth. They will now focus on adding one more advantage on their side with a home-court advantage after enhancing their seeding.

Atlanta will play the Los Angeles Sparks next on Monday, Aug. 24.
