Why homering twice vs. White Sox was so special for Mets’ Luis Robert Jr.

A familiar ballpark became the backdrop for Luis Robert Jr.’s latest power display, as the former Chicago White Sox outfielder homered twice at Rate Field in the New York Mets’ 10-5 win on Saturday. It was Robert’s second game back at the stadium since New York acquired him from Chicago on Jan. 20, following six seasons with the White Sox and nine years in the organization.

“It feels good to hit home runs against any team, but I will say it did feel good to hit the home runs here just because it was a stadium that I played so many games in,” the 29-year-old said after the game via an interpreter, reflecting on why homering twice against his former team was special to him.

Robert’s first blast came in the third inning against Luis Castillo. Two pitches earlier, he had successfully challenged a called third strike before launching a two-run homer that Statcast projected at 405 feet over the right-center-field fence. The drive gave the Mets a 4-1 advantage and drew boos from the home crowd.

His second home run came in the seventh inning against Huascar Brazoban, another player with ties to both clubs. Brazoban had opened the season with New York before being traded to Chicago on Aug. 3. Robert’s solo shot traveled 417 feet into the left-field seats, extending New York’s lead to 8-3.

The performance was his eighth career multi-homer game and his first since Aug. 16, 2024. It was also his first two-home-run game as a Met.

Robert was part of a five-homer attack for New York, with Bo Bichette, Carson Benge and Luis Torrens also going deep. The five home runs matched the Mets’ season high.

New York improved to 12-5 over its previous 17 games and won despite Christian Scott allowing four runs on five hits and four walks over 4 2/3 innings. Austin Warren earned the victory after throwing 1 2/3 scoreless innings.
