Duke’s Mike Krzyzewski’s grandson charged in fatal DWI crash

On Monday, former Duke basketball coach Mike Krzyzewski, who put the program on the map, was dealt a terrible blow. His 26-year-old grandson, Joseph Savarino, was indicted on misdemeanor DWI charges, per Brad Crawford of CBS Sports.

According to the report, on Saturday night, Savarino allegedly fatally struck a 15-year-old riding his bicycle in Durham, North Carolina, while driving his Ford Explorer.  The incident occurred at the intersection of Cole Mill Road and Wyndham Lane in Durham. Plus, Savarino’s blood alcohol level was at 0.11, and he had confessed to drinking before driving.

Additionally, Savarino was detained at the Durham County Detention Center before being released on $100,000 bond. Also, a judge ordered that his driver’s license be revoked. In a Facebook post, the victim’s mother identified him as Jack O’Shea.

This is the second time a grandson of Kryzewski was involved in a DWI. In 2022, Michael Savarino, a former Duke player, was charged with DWI while driving a car owned by former player Paolo Banchero. Ultimately, he was sentenced to 12 months’ probation.

The Savarinos are the sons of Debbie Savarino, the oldest of Krzyzewski’s three daughters and the assistant athletic director at Duke.

Kryzyzewski was the head coach at Duke for 42 seasons from 1980 to 2022. Along the way, he became one of the most successful coaches in college basketball history. He led the Blue Devils to five national championships (1991, 1992, 2001, 2010, and 2015). Plus, he secured 1,129 career wins. Additionally, Krzyzewski produced some of the best players in college basketball, including Christian Laettner, Grant Hill, Bobby Hurley, Jay Williams, Chris Duon, JJ Reddick, and Zion Williamson.

In 2021, Krzyzewski announced his retirement.
