Dodgers’ Freddie Freeman comments on surprising fan turnout vs. Royals

Los Angeles Dodgers fans have been spoiled with winning baseball for more than a decade and are coming off three World Series championship victories since 2020. They have experienced too much success to turn on LA just because of a rough stretch. Chavez Ravine was bustling with pride and support during Monday’s matchup versus the Kansas City Royals.

Tarik Skubal’s Dodger Stadium debut will naturally produce a big reaction, but people were also bringing it for their wounded ballclub. The back-to-back World Series champions needed a warm welcome from the home crowd after losing eight of their last nine games and falling below both the Milwaukee Brewers and Atlanta Braves. LA stepped up for its guys.

The Dodgers erased a 3-0 deficit, took the lead in the sixth inning via a Max Muncy three-run double, gave it back up after a Kyle Isbel two-run homer in the seventh and put away the Royals for good after another Freddie Freeman clutch base-hit. The ageless first baseman credited the fans for their relentless enthusiasm, which is not always guaranteed at the beginning of the week.

“It was nice,” Freeman told reporters after going 3-for-4 with two RBIs in the 6-5 triumph over KC. “Fifty thousand-plus on a Monday night, it felt like the fans were trying to will us to win tonight.”

Nothing is coming easy for the champs right now. The Dodgers are not supposed to grind their way to victory against a last-place squad at home. Though, following an awful start to August, it was important for this group to remember how to win ugly. The best teams can navigate trouble and still come out on top. The Boys in Blue have long embodied that quality, but they lost it during their recent losing streak. This inter-league battle was about getting back on track.

Although Tarik Skubal labored — allowed three runs and walked two batters in only five innings pitched — power bullpen duo Tanner Scott and Edwin Diaz posted a scoreless inning each, Freeman thrived at the plate and four-time MVP Shohei Ohtani wisely stole second base to position himself as the go-ahead run.

The Dodgers (71-48) seized the opportunities that were in front of them, but they had plenty of assistance. Los Angeles showed up in full force, seemingly unaffected by the club’s scuffles and a weak opponent. The stadium should be rocking again on Tuesday, as Blake Snell prepares to make his first MLB start in more than three months.
