Sky’s DiJonai Carrington urged to ‘stop gaslighting’ on social media

In just her fifth game for the Chicago Sky, DiJonai Carrington has already found herself in the middle of a controversy yet again due to her reaction after getting thrown out against the Indiana Fever at United Center on Saturday.

Carrington was assessed a flagrant foul 2 after her hard foul on Sophie Cunningham in the first quarter, leading to an automatic ejection. She later posted “WHITE PRIVILEGE” on Threads and tagged the Fever.

The mercurial guard was slammed for her reaction, which was viewed as a shot at Cunningham and Indiana. On “Speakeasy,” Emmanuel Acho called out Carrington and urged her to “stop gaslighting.”

“DiJonai, you can’t act as though you discovered the moon. You can’t act as though you are the genius in the room and everybody else is idiotic. If you are going to suggest that we should think critically about a statement of ‘white privilege,’ when you, at the Indiana Fever game, didn’t give us much to think critically about,” said Acho,

He prefaced his stance by praising the 28-year-old Carrington, lauding her ability to carry a conversation with “a little bit of intellect.” Acho, however, stressed that she should have been clearer with her message instead of being vague, given the topic.

“You uttered a phrase, ‘white privilege,’ which is both incredibly inflammatory and very volatile, but you didn’t give us any context. So, now, we, as the interpreters, since you posted it publicly on Threads for the world to see, have to try to figure out what exactly you were talking about. Well, common sense would deduce that you were talking about fouling a white individual and getting ejected for that white individual,” added the former NFL player.

Carrington has been embroiled in several issues in the past due to her unapologetic attitude and outspoken nature. In 2024, she had an infamous clash with Caitlin Clark.

The Sky signed Carrington, a former member of the All-Defensive First Team, to a one-year deal in the offseason. She missed their first 27 games due to a foot injury.
