Stephen A. Smith reveals real issue with Enes Kanter’s WNBA draft stunt

Former NBA player Enes Kanter caused a stir after posting a now-viral video about applying for next year’s WNBA Draft. It was his way to criticize the league amid the ongoing debates about transgender athletes, which were reignited by Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham after her recent comments.

Kanter claimed that he is eligible for the WNBA since he identifies as a woman “for purposes of professional basketball,” underscoring the supposed loopholes in the league’s rules. His unique stunt became a polarizing topic, with some agreeing with him and some blasting him for mocking a sensitive issue.

WNBA commissioner Engelbert has addressed the controversial situation, stating that a “task force” has been formed to discuss it.

ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith, however, was not satisfied with the league’s response.

“It’s too damn late! If your rules were finite and clear, you would not have a meeting of team presidents and general managers,” said Smith on his podcast.

“We’re literally living in a society where there has to be a debate involving a collective bargaining agreement (CBA) that explicitly states that the league is for women! ‘Only players who are women are eligible to play in the WNBA.’ So one could easily surmise, ‘OK, you’re a woman, that makes you eligible!’ If you’re not a woman, you are not eligible. It’s simple and plain! What’s the complication?”

Transgender athletes have become a global topic amid the increase of progressive views. While there may never be a sufficient resolution for everyone, the WNBA could provide more clarity in the CBA to avoid further complications.

“Our player eligibility rules, unlike the eligibility rules of some other leagues and governing bodies, are collectively bargained. Lastly, preserving the integrity of our game and ensuring fair competition will always remain among the league’s highest priorities,” said Engelbert.

The WNBA has enjoyed unprecedented success in recent years due to the nationwide popularity of its players, including the likes of A’ja Wilson, Caitlin Clark, Napheesa Collier, Paige Bueckers, and Kelsey Plum, just to name a few.
