Darius Cooper earns Week 1 starter hype from Eagles reporter

One of the best part of the NFL preseason is the prospects of a darkhorse depth piece coming out of nowhere to become a serious player for a team like the Philadelphia Eagles.

Though the summer is still young and the preseason hasn’t even opened up for South Philly’s finest, it sure looks like Howie Roseman might have accomplished just that, with PHLY’s Bo Wulf boldly declaring that Darius Cooper could be heading for a massive role in Week 1 after dominanting training camp thus far.

“The conversation has changed. You know, last week it was, ‘OK, Darius Cooper is on this team?’ He’s going to make this team. Darius Cooper has been the best receiver on the team over the course of training camp,” Wulf said.

“Obviously, he’s not a better player than DeVonta Smith, but DeVonta has not been healthy. Dontayvion Wicks has been pretty good, but Dontayvion Wicks has… There have been peaks and valleys. Darius Cooper has, every single day, made plays with Jalen Hurts as the quarterback. Makai Lemon is not healthy right now. You don’t know what his role is going to be. There is a real chance that Darius Cooper is playing 80% of the snaps Week 1.”

Initially joining the Eagles as an undrafted free agent out of Tarleton State, Cooper made Philadelphia’s roster as a rookie but barely played on offense, recording just 11 targets over his 212 snaps. And yet, much like Willie Lampkin, who has excelled in his second season in Philly as a UDFA, Cooper is rapidly locking up a roster spot with his exceptional play at the Jefferson Health Training Complex. If Smith and Lemon remain limited for the rest of August, who knows? Maybe Wulf’s evaluation will be proven correct and the Eagles could have one of the NFL’s great success stories catching passes from their Super Bowl MVP.
