Dodgers’ Dave Roberts defends Hyeseong Kim for wild overthrow error vs. Giants

The Los Angeles Dodgers clearly love playing for Dave Roberts, as seen in their back-to-back World Series championships. Considering how Roberts handled a costly error from Hyeseong Kim on Tuesday night against the San Francisco Giants, it isn’t hard to see why, according to Hyeseong Kim Muse via Twitter, formerly X.

“I think yesterday it rained right before the game, so the field was wet, and I just don’t think he was expecting that ball to be that wet,” Roberts told the assembled media. “Hyeseong’s played great defense. I’ve got no complaints with him.”

The way Roberts handled the error is why ex-MLB players normally make great managers. They understand that a baseball season is a long grind, and dwelling on mistakes like the one Kim made on Tuesday night will only prove costly down the road. Roberts needs all of his players to be in the right frame of mind as often as possible, and backing them in the media is a good way to do it.

Kim started the season in AAA after spending most of the 2025 regular season and playoffs with the Dodgers. Kim was nothing but a bench player in the postseason, but he was actually a valuable player for Los Angeles during the regular season.

Roberts also knows that injuries can pile up over the season, and he may need Hyeseong Kim more regularly than some might think. When managing an organization with plenty of top players who deserve to play every day, it isn’t easy to manage egos, but Roberts is doing it well.
