Hurricanes star Malachi Toney sees no limit for Miami’s offense

Malachi Toney doesn’t think there’s a ceiling on what this Miami offense can do, and Friday night’s season opener at Stanford did plenty to back that up. The seventh-ranked Hurricanes throttled the Cardinal 45-6, with Darian Mensah tossing five touchdown passes in his Miami debut and Toney setting the program’s single-game receiving record with 234 yards on 12 catches and 14 targets, adding three touchdowns in the process.

It marked Miami’s most lopsided season-opening win over an FBS opponent since 2003, when the Hurricanes beat Louisiana Tech 48-9.

Mensah, who transferred in from Duke this offseason, wasted no time building a rapport with his new top target. The two connected on touchdowns on Miami’s first two drives before hooking up on a 47-yard score in the third quarter that pushed Toney past the previous school record.

Asked about that chemistry after the win, Toney made it clear this is only the beginning.

“It’s amazing man, every weekend we got, we just keep getting better,” Toney said after the game. “The sky’s the limit. There’s no limit, actually.”

The 18-year-old also broke down what makes throwing to him look so easy for Mensah, crediting the quarterback’s feel for finding soft spots in coverage. “It’s just effortless,” he said. “You know, he understands how to get open, and it just makes it that much easier for me to do my job. So it’s easy.”

The record-setting night continued a trend for Toney, who burst onto the scene as a true freshman last season and quickly became the focal point of Miami’s passing attack. Toney enters this season fresh off winning ACC Offensive Rookie of the Year in 2025, when he led the nation in receptions as a true freshman, and Friday’s showing suggested that breakout was no fluke. With Mensah now running the offense after his own standout stint at Duke, the pairing looks like it could be one of the more dangerous quarterback-receiver duos in the country from Week 1 on.

Miami will look to keep the momentum going Thursday when it hosts Florida A&M, while Stanford heads to Duke on Sept. 19 looking to regroup after the lopsided defeat.
