Astros’ Josh Hader gets 100% real on elite performance since injury return
Josh Hader has been nothing short of automatic for the Houston Astros since returning from a biceps injury that cost him the first two months of the season, and he broke down how he got there in a sit-down interview with MLB Network.
The veteran closer has been dominant since coming off the injured list in June, posting a 0.72 ERA and a 0.67 WHIP with 49 strikeouts against just 11 walks over 37.1 innings. He’s converted all 22 of his save chances and is riding an active scoreless streak that has stretched past 20 innings, numbers that helped him claim his ninth career AL Reliever of the Month award in August without allowing a run all month.
Asked how he’s managed to dominate with a strikeout rate that’s actually down from his career norms, Hader credited a shift in approach he picked up while watching baseball during his rehab.
“I think I had a lot of time to watch baseball, coming back from injury, and one of the biggest things I saw throughout was the ABS changed on how guys approach their bats,” he said. “For me, I really wanted to attack the zone, and making sure that I’m in the zone with most pitches, and being able to just get them aggressive throughout to where maybe I get that one pitch pop-up, and I don’t have to go deeper into counts.”

Hader also pointed to a tightened up slider as a major factor, saying he’s focused on commanding the pitch to all parts of the plate rather than relying on it as a chase pitch.
The lefty also opened up about the toll it took watching Houston’s bullpen struggle without him early in the season. Once he returned, he said his presence helped settle the relief corps by giving everyone a clearer sense of their role and when they needed to be ready. As for his workload, Hader admitted his between-outing routine has changed with age, saying he’s cut down on his throws compared to when he was younger.
With Houston fighting for playoff positioning down the stretch, Hader’s return has proven to be one of the most important developments of the Astros’ season.
