Giants’ Rafael Devers accomplishes impressive feat not seen since Barry Bonds in 2004
Rafael Devers replicated a Barry Bonds feat following his performance in the San Francisco Giants’ series opener against the New York Mets on Friday night.
Devers is going through the 10th season of his career in the majors, his second with the Giants. He stands out as a talented hitter, having earned three All-Star selections during his time with the Boston Red Sox.
Going into the series opener against New York, Devers has recorded up to 66 extra-base hits this season. He added another one to his tally before the game’s conclusion, making history in the process as it featured Bonds’ accomplishment, per reporter Sarah Langs.
“Rafael Devers’ 67 extra-base hits are the most by a Giants player in the team’s first 142 games since 2004 Barry Bonds (67). Last with more thru 142 for SF: 2002 Kent (74) and Bonds (70),” Langs wrote.
How Rafael Devers, Giants played against Mets
Rafael Devers’ feat was one of the few bright spots for the Giants, losing 10-6 in their series opener against the Mets.
San Francisco got off to a painful start, seeing New York take control of the game with a 7-0 lead after two innings. The visitors never recovered from those defensive breakdowns, attempting a rally that proved to be too late for them to pull off.
Devers got the Giants as close as he could, getting a three-run homer in the eighth inning. That was the only home run his squad got in the game, showing how New York outmatched them offensively to open the series.
San Francisco fell to a 58-84 record on the season, sitting at fourth place in the NL West Division standings. They are above the Colorado Rockies while trailing the San Diego Padres and the Arizona Diamondbacks.
The Giants will look to bounce back in Game 2 of their series against the Mets. That contest will take place on Sept. 5 at 4:10 p.m. ET.
