Yankees’ Aaron Boone gives initial asessment of why Trent Grisham’s injury vs. Padres

Aaron Boone didn’t have definitive news on Trent Grisham’s hamstring after Friday’s extra-innings loss to the Padres, but he offered a full breakdown of how the injury unfolded. Grisham found himself injured again in the third inning with right hamstring discomfort, as the Padres would go on to win 3-2 in 10 innings on Luis Campusano’s walk-off homer.

It’s the same hamstring that put the 29-year-old on the injured list for several weeks back in June, and Boone said the Yankees will get imaging to determine the severity before deciding on a corresponding move.

“We’ll probably be getting imaging,” Boone told reporters after the game. “It seems like an injury so not sure yet if it’s an IL or not but certainly could be.”

Asked to pinpoint the moment, Boone said Grisham first felt something while attempting a steal, then aggravated it running for a ball hit into shallow center that dropped for a hit. The head tactician didn’t think the ball was catchable even at full health given how deep Grisham was playing and the awkward spot it landed in. He also noted Grisham hadn’t dealt with any hamstring issues since returning from his earlier injured list stint, making Friday’s exit especially frustrating.

Boone also downplayed a scare with Cody Bellinger, who appeared to be hopping around after fouling a pitch off his foot. “I think we’re okay there,” Boone said, adding the team would check on him again Saturday.

On the pitching side, Boone praised Max Fried for working into the sixth inning on a tidy pitch count while managing contact well throughout his outing. He also singled out Will Warren, who entered in a low-leverage spot with two outs and nobody on and delivered 2.1 strong relief innings, a performance Boone suggested could turn into a bigger bullpen role down the stretch and potentially into October.

The Yankees briefly took the lead in the 10th on a Spencer Jones RBI single, only for Luis Campusano to end it with a two-run walk-off homer off Paul Blackburn in the bottom half. Boone credited San Diego’s bullpen duo of Adrian Morejon and Mason Miller for making things difficult late, even as Jones’ hit briefly put New York ahead.

The Yankees and Padres continue their series Saturday as Boone awaits more clarity on Grisham’s timeline.
