Devils make a splash with Anthony Mantha signing
The New Jersey Devils have reshaped their forward group this offseason. In trading away Jacob Markstrom to the Florida Panthers, the team acquired Evan Rodrigues and Jesper Boqvist.
Now, the Devils have now added another forward to the group, according to hockey insider Elliotte Friedman.
Anthony Mantha has signed a two-year deal with the Devils. It has an AAV of $4.75 million. This leaves the Devils with just under $5 million in cap space left, but with all of their players under contract.
Mantha was the 20th overall selection of the 2013 NHL Draft by the Detroit Red Wings. He broke into the NHL in the 2015-16 season, playing ten games with the Wings that year. Mantha would become an NHL regular the following season. During the 2020-21 season, the Red Wings traded Mantha to the Washington Capitals. He played 14 games with the Caps that year, scoring four goals and adding four assists. The four goals were scored in the first four consecutive games with the team.
In recent years, Mantha has been well-traveled. The Capitals traded the forward to the Vegas Golden Knights during the 2023-24 campaign. He then decided not to re-sign with the Golden Knights and instead signed a one-year deal with the Calgary Flames. Still, he missed most of the season after tearing his ACL. After playing just 13 games with the Flames, Mantha was a free agent once again. He signed with the Pittsburgh Penguins in the offseason and had a bounce-back campaign.
Mantha played 81 games for the Penguins, finding the back of the net 33 times while adding 31 helpers. Now, the Devils will hope that their new forward can make the same impact this year for his new franchise.
