Giants’ Tony Vitello, Logan Webb ejected for arguing Nolan Arenado foul ball call

Emotions ran high for the San Francisco Giants in the third inning of an eventual 10-6 loss to the Arizona Diamondbacks. With a runner on first and already two outs in the inning, starting pitcher Blake Tidwell got Nolan Arenado to a 1-2 count as the Giants looked to keep their deficit at just one run, 3-2. Arenado, however, hit a sharp slicing ball towards the third base line, which the third base umpire called fair.

However, from the Giants’ point of view, they felt as though that hit from Arenado, which ended up being a double, crossed the third base bag while in foul territory. They believe that Arenado should have returned to home plate and received another 1-2 pitch from Tidwell.

This belief of theirs was so strong that manager Tony Vitello and starting pitcher Logan Webb both protested the call way too passionately for the umpire’s liking, and they ended up being ejected from the game.

While Arenado’s hit itself did not score a run for the Diamondbacks, this allowed Arizona to extend the inning and bring Tim Tawa to the plate. Tawa subsequently hit a home run on the following at-bat, which must have made the Giants’ blood boil all the more as the Diamondbacks extended their lead to four runs, 6-2.

Baseball is indeed a game of inches, and in real time, it certainly looked like when Giants third baseman Shay Whitcomb had the play on the ball, the ball was in foul territory. Perhaps the third base umpire saw that the ball bounced fair down the line before it ricocheted towards foul ground near Whitcomb.

The Giants climbed back into the game, pulling it back to within one run, 6-5, by the end of the fifth inning. Alas, a three-run inning by the Diamondbacks in the sixth eventually doomed San Francisco for good, leaving the Giants to wonder how differently the game would have turned out had the third base umpire ruled Arenado’s hit a foul ball.
