Watch Trevon Diggs record his 1st interception with Seahawks

The Seattle Seahawks got an immediate glimpse of what Trevon Diggs can bring to their defense in his first game with the team, as the veteran defensive back plucked an interception against the Kansas City Chiefs at Arrowhead Stadium in the preseason finale.

Diggs, who signed with Seattle on Aug. 19 on a one-year, minimum-salary contract, needed only three defensive series to make his presence felt. Midway through the first quarter, he intercepted Chiefs third-string quarterback Garrett Nussmeier, producing Seattle’s only defensive takeaway of the night.

The play showcased Diggs’ experience and ball skills. Lining up near the hash in Mike Macdonald’s defense, Diggs stayed with his receiver and read Nussmeier’s intentions before breaking toward the pass. The throw was underthrown, allowing Diggs to get in front of Xavier Worthy’s route and secure the pick.

Diggs then returned the interception deep downfield before reaching the end zone. The Seahawks were subsequently flagged for excessive celebration, but the turnover still gave Seattle an opportunity to put points on the board. Jalen Milroe and the offense converted the possession into a scoring drive, while Jason Myers later supplied a 46-yard field goal.

The interception was stood out given Diggs’ previous production. He led the NFL with 11 interceptions in 2021 and earned first-team All-Pro recognition that season. The two-time Pro Bowl selection is now attempting to revive his career after knee injuries disrupted his progress.

His debut was not flawless. Diggs made an impressive tackle on a Kansas City rushing play but also missed an opportunity to bring down tight end Travis Kelce in the open field. Still, the interception became the defining moment of his first appearance in Seattle.

The Seahawks ultimately finished the preseason with a 9-9 tie after Myers missed a potential 52-yard game-winning field goal wide right as time expired. Diggs’ short appearance nevertheless gave Seattle a positive development as the team evaluates its crowded cornerback competition ahead of the Sept. 9 season opener against the New England Patriots.

With Devon Witherspoon, Josh Jobe, rookie Julian Neal and either Nehemiah Pritchett or Noah Igbinoghene also competing for roster spots, Diggs’ first interception with the Seahawks give him an early highlight in that battle.
