Cubs lose another pitcher to IL after Edward Cabrera injury
The Chicago Cubs placed Edward Cabrera on the 15-day IL after he suffered a left hamstring and adductor strain during Tuesday’s 9-6 win over the New York Mets. On Wednesday, the club announced that another pitcher on the roster is heading to the IL, putting the pitching group in a tough spot.
Reports indicate that Ben Brown, who is dealing with a neck strain, is joining Cabrera on the IL, according to Bob Nightengale of USA Today. Both players are going on the 15-day IL.
“The Chicago Cubs put two more starters on the IL with Ben Brown (neck strain) joining Edward Cabrera (hamstring strain) on the 15-day IL,” reported Nightengale.
That makes five total pitchers in the starting rotation on the injured list for Chicago, as Matthew Boyd will finally return. That’s not including the four pitchers in the bullpen, also on the IL, as the Cubs recently placed closer Daniel Palencia on the 15-day IL as well. With the amount of injuries on the roster, manager Craig Counsell may have to get creative moving forward.
Ben Brown, a three-year veteran with the Cubs, has been enjoying a career year so far this season. He’s come out of the bullpen while also helping in the starting rotation, appearing in 20 total games with eight starts. Through 68.0 innings pitched, the 26-year-old right-hander owns a 1.85 ERA (career-best) and 0.941 WHIP (career-best) with 65 strikeouts. His lone knock is that Brown leads MLB in wild pitches with six.
While the Cubs need to figure out how to address the starting rotation moving forward, Chicago will be using two of its healthy starters in Wednesday’s doubleheader against the Mets. Javier Assad got the start for the morning game, while Shota Imanaga will start the evening game.
