Guardians GM gets brutally honest on MLB trade deadline moves

With the Cleveland Guardians coming off the 2026 MLB trade deadline, the team has high expectations after making significant moves to the roster. As the Guardians traded for outfielder Jo Adell, first baseman Nathaniel Lowe, pitcher Foster Griffin, and outfielder Blake Perkins, general manager Mick Chernoff would give his take on the moves made.

Speaking to MLB Network, Chernoff would be asked about the mindset at the trade deadline, with the executive mentioning how Cleveland is in the midst of three races, which are for the AL Central, a wild-card spot, and a bye in the postseason.

“We did feel like this was a real opportunity to invest in the team as we were on the brink of a very competitive American League,” Chernoff said. “So we felt like if there were good opportunities to improve the team, we felt like this was the time to do it…the four trades that we made in the couple of days leading up to the deadline, we felt like those were great chances for us to make our team better.”

Guardians’ Mick Chernoff speaks on Jo Adell, Nathaniel Lowe trades 

Chernoff would continue on the moves made, especially on the offensive side of the ball, as to how players like Adell could improve the Guardians against left-handed pitching, as they are the third-worst in batting average (.225).

“Jo Adell has a history of mashing left-handed pitching, being really strong versus right-handed pitching. He can be a threat in the lineup anywhere he is. And Nate Lowe is a professional at-bat, a really good hitter, and just provides a lot of stability in what’s otherwise a very young lineup,” Chernoff said.

This season, Adell has recorded a .306 batting average against left-handed pitchers, hitting 10 home runs and 29 RBIs as he was with the Los Angeles Angels for most of the season.

It remains to be seen if the moves for Adell, Lowe, and others will prove fruitful for Cleveland, as they are currently 58-59, putting them third in the division, ahead of Saturday’s game against the Chicago White Sox.
