Cubs break bonkers record that’s held since 1969

The Chicago Cubs are on a roll. They are in the midst of a three-game series against the Arizona Diamondbacks. On Monday, the Cubs shut out Arizona 7-0.

The following day, they notched 4 unanswered runs through the end of the 7th inning. As a result, the Cubs set a new mark for unanswered runs scored in franchise history, per Bob Nightengale of USA Today. They have now scored 30 unanswered runs over a recent stretch, passing the original record set in 1969 in 29. The streak ran from May 11 to 13.

Meanwhile, the Cubs’ unanswered-run streak dates back to their Aug. 23 matchup against the Seattle Mariners. After Seattle scored two runs through the first two innings, Chicago scored 19 straight runs.

In 1969, Chicago returned to prominence. After years in last place, they were back on top. Led by Ernie Banks, Ron Santo, Fergie Jenkins, and Billy Williams, the Cubs were on their way. They had jumped out to a sizable 9.5-game lead over the New York Mets in the National League.

However, Chicago’s hopes for the pennant were dashed as the “Miracle Mets” went on a late-season 23-7 run. In September, the Mets swept the Cubs in a two-game series at then-Shea Stadium. Ultimately, the Mets would win the pennant and the World Series.

Fast forward to Today, the Cubs lead the National League Wild Card standings at 76-56. Meanwhile, the Philadelphia Phillies are trailing at 73-59.

After wrapping up against the Diamondbacks, they will face off against the Cincinnati Reds in a three-game series at Wrigley Field beginning on Friday.
