Cowboys’ Super Bowl hype is justified with DC Christian Parker already making a difference

While the Dallas Cowboys still have to deal with wide receiver contract issues, the defense looks much better than it did in 2025. Therefore, the Cowboys’ Super Bowl hype is justified with defensive coordinator Christian Parker already making a difference.

The Cowboys grabbed Parker from the Eagles back in January. The 34-year-old is considered a defensive whiz, and he helped the Eagles finish with the eighth-fewest passing yards allowed and fewest passing touchdowns in the NFL in 2025.

Of course, he’s unproven as a full-time coordinator. But things are definitely looking up on the defensive side of the ball for the Cowboys.

Will Christian Parker make that big of a difference with Cowboys?

Parker said he came to the organization to do a job, not be the sole reason for the team turning things around, according to The Athletic.

“Because it’s about the collective (group),” Parker said. “And I think that we’re all equally responsible for that, for the good and the bad. I’m just trying to do my part.”

So far, so good for Parker.

“It’s been good,” he said. “Obviously, it’s a lot. It’s an increase in responsibility. It’s an increase in even my communication. Everything has been great in terms of the communication. There are very clear expectations of what I need to do and what the staff needs to do.”

One of the things that bodes well for Parker is his intelligence. He appears to have an extremely firm grasp of the entire defensive picture, even though his specialty has been in the defensive backfield.

“He’s extremely smart when it comes down to the defense and how he sees the game,” Cowboys defensive lineman Quinnen Williams said. “(He) just kind of opened my eyes on when I can take my shots, when I can do certain things.

“Even constructive criticism from what he sees I need to work on from his point of view, and what he feels like I can do better from his point of view. And the respect that he has for me, I have for him.”

Parker will have to excel in Year 1 at play-calling if the Cowboys are going to make the playoffs and create noise once they get there. He said he understands that’s the biggest part of the learning curve. And Cowboys’ fans won’t be patient. The first time the Cowboys blow a coverage and give up a long touchdown, the eyes will roll, and the boos will follow.

But Parker said he’s ready for the play-calling challenge.

“Every play caller had to call his first game at some point and time,” Parker said. “So I really don’t think about that too much. It’s going to be what it’s going to be. I know what the expectations are, whether I’m 65 and a 20-year play caller or 34 and a first-time one, the result needs to look the same. We take that seriously. I don’t really overthink that part.”

What are the Cowboys banking on defensively?

Even if Parker hits the ground running, the success or failure of the defense will still come down to Jimmys and Joes. So who will have to come up big for the team to win double-digit games?

Starting with the defensive line, Williams is a given. He has made four straight Pro Bowls. And at age 28, he’s plenty young enough to keep that steak alive.

But his interior running mates are different. Otito Ogbonnia started 17 games for the Chargers in 2024. However, in 2025, he didn’t draw a starting assignment and appeared in just nine games. If he doesn’t provide solid play, the Cowboys could still have some issues against running attacks that are good between the tackles.

As for Kenny Clark, he’ll be 31 years old this season. And he’s two years removed from a Pro Bowl selection. It’s possible for him to have a good year, but it’s not a guarantee like Williams.

At the edge rusher positions, Rashan Gary, Donovan Ezeiruaku, James Houston, and Malachi Lawrence are the main factors. Gary has something to prove and should be solid. One of the other three needs to step up and be a contributing force. It’s not out of the realm of possibility for either Ezeiruaku or Lawrence to be a weapon before the season is done.

At middle linebacker, the Cowboys are solid with DeMarvion Overshown and Dee Winters as long as Overshown stays healthy. In fact, his health could be critical to Parker’s success.

As for the secondary, there are reasons to be excited. DaRon Bland and Cobie Durant should be solid at the corners, with rookie Caleb Downs joining Jalen Thompson and Malik Hooker in a revamped secondary. That group gives Parker plenty of weapons to deploy. If the talent excuses come, they will be from the front seven, not the secondary.

So, does Parker have the Jimmys and Joes? Yes. And therefore, it’s up to him.

But as of now, it looks like Parker has an excellent chance to succeed. And if he does, the Cowboys’ Super Bowl hype is legitimate.
