Pirates acquire Luke Weaver in Mets trade to bolster bullpen

With the Pittsburgh Pirates just on the outside looking in at a Wild Card spot this season, the front office made a move on Monday to improve the bullpen before the trade deadline. In a deal with the New York Mets, the club is bringing in a talented right-handed reliever.

Reports indicate that the Pirates are acquiring Luke Weaver, according to Jorge Castillo of ESPN. It is currently unknown what Pittsburgh is sending New York in the deal. But the franchise improves the bullpen just before the 6 p.m. EST trade deadline.

“The Pirates are acquiring Luke Weaver from the Mets, a source tells ESPN,” Castillo reported.

Weaver, who turns 33 in August, is in the middle of a career year. He’s been a stellar relief pitcher for the Mets, working primarily as a long or middle reliever this year. Through 44.0 innings pitched, the 11-year veteran owns a 1.84 ERA (career-best) and 0.818 WHIP (career-best) with 45 strikeouts while also adding one save.
