Contract grade for Patriots’ Christian Gonzalez’s $135 million extension

It’s about time. One of the many stories around the New England Patriots this offseason was their contract negotiations with star cornerback Christian Gonzalez. Gonzalez firmly entrenched himself as one of the best cornerbacks in the league last season. With the 2026 season being his fourth season in the league, Gonzalez was due for a contract extension.

It was an agonizing wait for Patriots fans: the two sides could not seemingly agree on a deal as the preseason rolled on. Between Gonzo’s cryptic comments and the reports surrounding the team, it seemed like the 2026 season would start with the CB’s contract still unsigned. That would have posed a ton of problems for New England down the line.

With just days before their season debut, though, the Patriots finally figured it all out. It was announced today that Christian Gonzalez has signed a major contract extension with the team. It’s a four-year contract worth $135 million for the star cornerback.

Now, it’s time to ask the important question: how did the Patriots do here? Was this a fair contract for the star cornerback?

Despite delay, Patriots make the right choice with Gonzalez contract

The blueprint for big-time contracts nowadays is that the first team to sign their star player to a big contract wins. With the market inflating after every major extension, it’s imperative for teams to secure a contract with their star before other teams give their own star a market-setting contract. In that regard, the Patriots failed in that matter.

Three weeks ago, the Seattle Seahawks signed their own star cornerback, Devon Witherspoon to a record-setting contract extension. Witherspoon got a four-year, $132 million deal from Seattle. This was bad news for the Patriots, as this meant that Gonzalez was likely going to ask for a similar, if not a bigger, contract. The fact that Witherspoon and Gonzalez shared an agent complicated matters.

This shouldn’t have deterred the Patriots, and it certainly didn’t dissuade them from keeping Gonzo on the team. In a league with a lot of elite cornerbacks, Gonzales is firmly in top five conversations, if not top three. He’s one of the best coverage corners in the league, allowing a completion rate of just under 54%. His zero-interception 2025 season masks just how good he’s been, recording 10 passes defended in that time.

Gonzalez was one of the few bright spots of the Patriots’ Super Bowl appearance. Seahawks quarterback Sam Darnold had a passer rating of just 40.4 when he targeted Gonzalez’s area. The cornerback recorded three passes defended, including a near-interception at the goal-line. He was one of the reasons that the Patriots did not get completely blown up in the Super Bowl.

Negotiating a contract that’s just $3 million more than his competitor’s contract is a win for the Patriots. We can dock a few points for the delay, as it made them spend a little more than what they could have gotten if they figured out the contract earlier. Still, the Patriots were able to keep their star cornerback on the team for the foreseeable future. After next year’s round of contract extensions, Gonzo’s deal will start looking more and more like a steal.
