Porto went unbeaten at home on their way to the title last season, have won all six competitive games this term and have conceded just one league goal. City are three from three in the Premier League but have been far from convincing, edging Coventry 1-0 at the weekend and Maresca has a Manchester derby to think about on Sunday.

Porto or draw

WHY: Porto have lost just one of their last 14 European home matches, winning ten and drawing three, so the double chance has landed in 13 of those 14.

Francesco Farioli’s side did not lose a single home league game on the way to the title last season and have started this one with three home wins out of three. Six competitive games, six wins, one goal conceded. That is a settled, confident side playing in front of 50,000.

City, by contrast, are still working out what Maresca wants from them. The three league wins have been narrow, Jeremy Doku is injured, Nico O’Reilly is a doubt and Maresca has said Ayyoub Bouaddi, Iliman Ndiaye and Ryan McAidoo will get Champions League minutes.

Rotation in Portugal with United four days later looks likely. The last time City came here they drew 0-0, and at better than evens I am happy to side with the hosts not losing.

KEY STAT: Porto have avoided defeat in 13 of their last 14 European home games.

Erling Haaland 2+ shots on target

WHY: Haaland has recorded three, three and two shots on target in City’s three league games this season, so he has hit two or more in every one of them. That is eight shots on target from 14 attempts, an average of 2.7 on target a game, and he has scored in all three.

Over his last ten appearances he has 15 shots on target in just 593 minutes, which works out at more than two per 90.

Maresca has talked about needing to protect Haaland over a long season, but City have no like-for-like replacement and Antoine Semenyo at nine is a sizeable drop. Even if he is managed, Betfair’s Safe Sub rule means the leg transfers to his replacement if he is taken off.

Against a Porto side missing the suspended Jan Bednarek at centre-back, I want the best striker in the world on my side.

KEY STAT: Haaland has had 2+ shots on target in all three Premier League games this season, averaging 2.7 a game.

Porto 3+ corners

WHY: This leg is the glue that keeps the price together without adding much risk. Porto’s corner totals in their three home league games this season are nine, 12 and seven. Their last three Europa League home games produced five, four and four. That is 3+ corners in all six, and in fact 4+ in all six, so the line gives me a corner of slack.

Across that sample Porto averaged 6.8 corners a game at home with four their lowest total. Farioli’s side press high and get wide players and full-backs forward, and even against a City side that will dominate possession, three corners across 90 minutes is a low bar for the home team to clear.
