Brewers’ Pat Murphy pinpoints ‘most impressive’ part of win vs. Cubs

The Milwaukee Brewers came alive towards the end of their Monday afternoon contest against the Chicago Cubs. After struggling on offense for most of the game, they kept at it and scored three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning on their way to taking a 4-3 victory over their division rival. With this latest victory, they moved to 89-56 on the season and expanded their lead at the top of the NL Central to eight games with 17 games remaining in the regular season.

It wasn’t the easiest of games for the Brewers. But manager Pat Murphy is proud of his guys for staying the course and bouncing back at the most opportune moments.

“The thing that’s most impressive to me, (Jackson) Chourio had three at-bats where he had not looked good. Came back and responded in his fourth at-bat. Same with (Christian) Yelich. That’s the kind of stuff that makes a difference. (Luis) Lara strikes out with (runners at) first and third to end the (eighth) inning and goes back and makes a catch against the fence like that,” Murphy said in his postgame presser, via Hunter Baumgardt of FOX Sports 920.

” That response type stuff is what it’s all about. Responding after things don’t go right, as quickly as possible.”

Chourio hit the go-ahead single in the eighth inning, driving in two runs for the Brewers to give them a lead they would not relinquish. This was a solid bounce back after he popped up, flew out weakly, and grounded out in his first three plate appearances.

Yelich wasn’t much better. He had two strikeouts and a groundout to his name, but he did pad the Brewers’ lead by one run by driving in a teammate thanks to a sacrifice fly.

And then there’s the rookie Lara. He stranded two runners for the Brewers in the eighth instead of blowing the game wide open, but he made up for it in the ninth by stealing an extra-base hit from Pedro Ramirez. This was a huge catch, as Pete Crow-Armstrong homered on the very next at-bat, which could have tied the game had it not been for Lara.

The Brewers’ three-game series against the Cubs at home continues on Tuesday afternoon.
