Colin Cowherd calls Hornets’ LaMelo Ball-led offense a ‘frat party’

LaMelo Ball and the Charlotte Hornets beat the Miami Heat 127-126 in overtime in the Play-In Tournament, which triggered a dismissive take from Fox Sports 1’s Colin Cowherd. Ball’s game-winning 3-pointer eliminated the Heat from playoff contention. Coby White saved the Hornets’ season in regulation, connecting on a 3-pointer to send the game into OT after nearly stepping out of bounds.

However, Ball, White, and the Hornets’ win over the Heat received a sour reaction from Cowherd, per Fox Sports 1’s The Herd.

“Essentially, the Hornets’ offense with LaMelo Ball is a frat party with no chaperone. They are out of control. Last night he had 30 points and was 2-for-16 on threes. And still had 10 assists and 30 points. They’re kind of a mess. It’s not schemes. It’s not great sets. The coach lets them play, and LaMelo Ball is one of the really entertaining, flashy players. Of all the Ball brothers, he’s got the game.”

Surrounded by scorers and shooters, Hornets’ LaMelo Ball leaned on Miles Bridges’ offense, which produced 28 points on 10-for-18 shooting, including five threes. Brandon Miller added 23 points, including five threes as well, and Ball led all scorers with 30 points, but finished 2-for-16 from deep and 10-for-15 from inside the arc. For Colin Cowherd, it was a perfect combination of talent to assist Ball with the victory.

“They’ve got Miles Bridges, who’s had kind of a rocky career. They went and got Coby White from the Bulls. They went and stole him. He’s kind of a shot-maker. Not a great player, but definitely a shot-maker,” Cowherd added. “This team knows what they are. It’s like semi out-of-control basketball with three really good young players, and a couple of veterans.”

The Hornets will face the loser of Wednesday’s Philadelphia 76ers-Orlando Magic matchup on Friday.

Charles Lee on Coby White’s game-tying shot in Hornets’ win

Hornets head coach Charles Lee put the ball in Coby White’s hands with the season on the line. Down by three, with the league’s most-efficient 3-point shooter — Kon Knueppel — 0-for-6 from beyond the arc, Lee turned to White in the corner. And he didn’t disappoint.

Lee explained why he had so much confidence in White during his postgame media availability.

“He’s been huge since he got here. He showed who he is again tonight in a big moment — a win-or-go-home game. He didn’t have a great first half, but I thought that he just continued to stick with it and found his way and came up with huge plays down the stretch,” Lee said. “He’s been here before. He’s confident in himself, and we’re confident in him as well.”

White was traded to the Hornets from the Bulls at the deadline.
