Coco Gauff advances to the last 16 of US Open with commanding performance
American players stumbled during the third round of US Open play on Saturday afternoon, putting an even bigger burden on Coco Gauff to triumph in Arthur Ashe Stadium. The two-time major champion and No. 4 seed did not disappoint an anxious fan base that was still reeling after seeing Madison Keys, Amanda Anisimova and Taylor Fritz all go down in the span of a few hours. She dispatched of Cristina Bucsa 6-3, 6-4 to clinch a spot in the Round of 16.
Gauff did not display her best brand of tennis, struggling on the forehand from time to time, but she used elite conditioning and an impressive backhand to defeat the 28-year-old Spaniard. Seeking to conquer Queens for the second time in her career — bested Aryna Sabalenka in 2023 US Open — the Florida native has yet to drop a set.
