Blue Jays place Jameson Taillon on IL as playoffs draw near

The Toronto Blue Jays are in the mix for a possible playoff appearance this year, as the club is knocking on the door of a spot in the Wild Card. However, the team was forced to place starting pitcher Jameson Taillon on the IL at the worst possible time of the season.

Reports indicate that the 34-year-old right-hander is going on the 15-day IL due to right elbow inflammation. In a corresponding move, Toronto called up left-hander Ricky Tiedemann from Triple-A Buffalo.

“ROSTER MOVES,” the Blue Jays posted on X. “LHP Ricky Tiedemann recalled from Triple-A and will be active tonight. RHP Jameson Taillon (right elbow inflammation) placed on the 15-day IL.”

Taillon played three games for the Blue Jays before going on the IL again. While it’s been a frustrating campaign as a whole, his short stint in Toronto has been rather successful. In 10.0 innings pitched for the club, the 10-year veteran owns a 3.60 ERA and 1.400 WHIP while totaling eight strikeouts.

Ricky Tiedemann is a rookie who made his MLB debut earlier this season. The 24-year-old has flashed major potential on the mound early in his career. However, he’s only played out of the bullpen so far in Toronto. In 2.2 innings pitched in the majors, he owns a 3.38 ERA and 1.500 WHIP with two strikeouts.

The Blue Jays will have a chance to push the record above .500 on Saturday. Toronto is set to take on the Kansas City Royals on the road for the second matchup of a three-game series. A victory would extend the club’s win streak to four.
