If the Pittsburgh football Panthers are going to surprise people and climb the ACC standings this year, then Mason Heintschel will probably be a big reason why. The sophomore quarterback enjoyed a historic season debut in Saturday’s home game against Miami (Ohio), completing 31-of-41 passes for 453 yards and a whopping seven touchdowns. That last number matches a program record, per the team’s X account.

The competition obviously factored into the mammoth showing a bit, but the odds makers were not anticipating a 59-14 drubbing, nor did they expect a 19-year-old to post a record-tying performance. Heintschel is firmly on the radar now.

The Panthers will have to earn a few more convincing victories before the public gives them their flowers, but if nothing else, this dominant opener should leave fans quite intrigued about the offense.
