Chris Finch confesses what Timberwolves ‘definitely’ need to help Anthony Edwards

The Minnesota Timberwolves will search for upgrades this summer after a fifth consecutive playoff appearance fell short of a Western Conference title. Chris Finch said his team needs another ball-handler to take pressure off Anthony Edwards.

“We definitely need another ball handler and playmaker,” Finch said on KFAN1003. “Somebody who can initiate the offense, take the load off of Anthony, get Anthony back to his natural best spot. I think there’s a lot of things that we gained by putting Anthony on the ball. I think there’s a lot of things he learned. I think those things will pay off in subsequent seasons, to be quite honest with you. So that’s a silver lining, but there’s no doubt we need somebody to kind of help him. It just put too much on his plate.”

Edwards shouldered a heavy burden while leading the Timberwolves’ offense this season, posting a 31.4 percent usage rate. He posted career-best numbers in the role, averaging 28.8 points, 5.0 rebounds and 3.7 assists on .489/.399/.796 shooting splits.

Will Timberwolves bring in backcourt help alongside Anthony Edwards this summer?

However, Edwards missed a career-high 21 games during the regular season while battling hamstring, foot and knee injuries. He suffered a hyperextended knee early in the playoffs and missed two games before returning. With Donte DiVincenzo sidelined by an Achilles tear, Minnesota fell in six games to the San Antonio Spurs in the second round.

The Timberwolves acquired Ayo Dosunmu at the trade deadline to assume some of their ball-handling responsibilities. Dosunmu had success following the move, averaging 15.6 points, 3.6 rebounds and 4.1 assists on .500/.425/.926 shooting splits across 10 playoff appearances. That included a 43-point performance during the team’s series-clinching win over the Denver Nuggets.

However, Dosunmu is not a true point guard and will be an unrestricted free agent this summer. Minnesota will likely need to shed salary elsewhere to retain him. The Timbweolves could attach assets to DiVincenzo’s contract in a salary dump, as he’s set to miss most of next season.

Beyond Dosunmu, Minnesota could shop Julius Randle as part of deals for backcourt upgrades. The Timberwolves have the No. 28 pick in this year’s draft and will be able to trade another future first-round pick on draft night. They are also projected to have access to the taxpayer mid-level exception ($6.1 million) in free agency.
