Man Utd vs Sabah prediction

Manchester United have made an inconsistent start to the new campaign so far, winning one, drawing one and losing the other of their three matches in charge.

The season kicked off with a catastrophic start for Michael Carrick’s side as they were defeated by a newly promoted Hull side who had been widely expected to be a certainty for rock bottom this season, falling to a 2-0 defeat in their opening match.

The Red Devils then went 1-0 down at home to Ipswich, another newly promoted side, in their next match but recovered well to win 5-2, and only missed out on making it two wins out of three after conceding a 96th minute equaliser at Everton on Sunday afternoon.

Four points from three games leaves United sat 11th in the Premier League table ahead of their eagerly anticipated return to European football’s biggest stage as they take the field in the Champions League for the first time in three years, and their first European appearance at any level since their defeat to Tottenham in the 2025 Europa League final.

Visiting Old Trafford on Thursday night are Sabah, a club who only celebrated their ninth birthday on Tuesday and are making their first ever appearance in the league phase of a European competition after being crowned champions of Azerbaijan for the first time in their short history last season.

The club’s Lithuanian manager, Valdas Dambrauskas, has a remarkable story of using his winnings from appearing on the Lithuanian version of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? to fund a move to England to pursue a football coaching career, which includes spending five years as a youth coach at Manchester United in the late 2000s.

Nicknamed the Owls, Sabah have had progress through four rounds of qualifying to reach the league phase of the Champions League, their campaign starting way back on 7th July with a 2-0 win over Welsh champions The New Saints.

After defeating the champions of Wales in the first qualifying round, Sabah then progressed past the champions of Finland, Denmark and Israel, scoring a 94th minute equaliser in the play-off round to take their match with Hapoel Be’er Sheva to extra time, in which they scored twice to book their place in the league phase.

The ‘Theatre of Dreams’ could will be the most apt place to begin their first ever Champions League campaign, but Manchester United should prove too much for the Azerbaijani champions, perhaps a steady 3-0 home win to open their account for the campaign.

Man Utd vs Sabah tips

Ruthless Red Devils to overpower Owls of Azerbaijan

Thursday’s match is no doubt the biggest game of Sabah’s short history, but it’s also a sizable game for Manchester United, who will still be expected to put a strong squad out upon their return to the Champions League after three years.

Many of the big hitters are expected to start for Michael Carrick’s side who will be looking to put a statement out to the rest of the competition with a big win against opposition they overpower heavily in every position.

Bruno banging the goals in

Bruno Fernandes will be looking forward to returning to Old Trafford for United’s second home game of the season after scoring a hat trick in their first, a 5-2 win over Ipswich, making the Portugal international Man Utd’s top goal scorer this season.

Lepinji-carded

No Sabah player has been booked on more occasions this season than their Croatian defensive midfielder Ivan Lepinjica.

The 27-year-old has played all but 20 minutes of every match for the Azerbaijani champions in all competitions this season, and has been on the receiving end of two yellow cards, including one in their dramatic extra time win over Hapoel Be’er Sheva in the second leg of their play-off round win.

The former Croatia U21 international will be in for a long and tiring match at the heart of midfield against Old Trafford, and will do well not to have his name taken on Thursday night.
