Cheryl Reeve bummed Lynx didn’t win ‘for the gays’ on Pride Night

The Minnesota Lynx lost in brutal fashion on Sunday night. Minnesota fell 84-79 against Washington, giving them their fourth loss on the season. The Lynx are still one of the WNBA’s best teams at 13-4, but the team feels like they let their fans down for a surprising reason after their latest defeat.

Lynx head coach Cheryl Reeve explained that Sunday’s loss was a bummer for multiple reasons. Minnesota hosted a Pride Night for their fans at Target Center for Sunday’s game against Washington. Reeve expressed disappointment that the Lynx could not get the win “for the gays” on Pride Night.

“The crowd was amazing. We should’ve done it for the gays, but we didn’t get it done,” Reeve joked during her postgame remarks. “The support that we’ve gotten, obviously a special day like today being our Pride Game, we’re motivated by our crowds. They were with us every step of the way, even when they felt some frustrations too, but they kept bringing it and we appreciate them immensely.”

Reeve is not simply an ally. She is openly gay and happily married to Lynx VP Carley Knox.

But the Lynx tried their best and made it quite difficult for the Mystics to squeak past them.

It should be no surprise that rookie Olivia Miles showed up ready to play on Sunday. The 23-year-old guard had another impressive performance, logging 22 points, five rebounds, six assists, and two blocks. She led all players, on either team, in scoring.

Still, the Mystics were able to pull ahead thanks to big nights from Sonia Citron (21 points) and Kiki Iriafen (17 points).

Minnesota does not have to wait long before getting a chance for revenge.

Next up for the Lynx is a rematch against the Mystics on the road. That game tips off at 7:30PM ET on Wednesday from CareFirst Arena in Washington, D.C.
