Wizards rumors: Anthony Davis contract decision will only fuel trade speculation, but not right now

The Washington Wizards have built a full nucleus since last season’s trade deadline, and it seems like they’re ready to start competing at a high level. A part of that nucleus is Anthony Davis, who was traded from the Dallas Mavericks at the deadline, but hasn’t played for the Wizards yet. Though there were trade rumors during the offseason, the Wizards actually want to extend Davis, but not until during the season, according to Josh Robbins of The Athletic.

“League sources who were granted anonymity to speak freely told The Athletic that any meaningful talks between Davis and the Wizards about a possible extension will occur during the 2026-27 season, not before,” Robbins wrote.

“The decision to hold off on substantive talks until the season could stem in part from both parties needing to learn more about each other — questions that perhaps can only be answered after Davis and the team have played a large enough sample size of regular-season games.”

Davis is one of the better players in the league at his position, and you know what you’re going to get from him when he steps on the court. The only thing is that he’s barely been on the court over the past few years due to injuries.

Also to note, Davis has come out several times after he was traded to the Wizards and said that he likes what the team is building, but is uncertain if they could make such a rise in the Eastern Conference in one year. It’s obvious that Davis feels he’s at the point of his career where he wants to compete for championships, and with how young the Wizards are, it’s hard to see them having a quick turnaround.

Both sides are definitely feeling each other out, and it’ll be interesting what the final verdict is during the season.
