Braxton Jones’ training camp injury scare delivers twist in Bears’ LT battle

After signing Darnell Wright to a $116 million contract extension, the Chicago Bears have found their right tackle for the foreseeable future. But their situation at left tackle tells an entirely different story.

Braxton Jones was forced to leave practice on Thursday, via Adam Jahns of CHGO. While the nature of his injury hasn’t yet been revealed, Jones’ reaction paints a worrying picture.

“Bears LT Braxton Jones just left practice,” Jahns wrote. “He was visibly upset during one-on-one drills. He threw his helmet. Dan Roushar briefly stopped him. Jones then talked to the training staff and headed inside Halas Hall. He was running with the 1s again.”

Second-year man Ozzy Trapilo looked like the left tackle of the future to end the 2025 season. However, a ruptured Achilles tendon has put Trapilo’s 2026 in doubt. Because of that, the Bears were more inclined to bring Jones back on a one-year deal.

The tackle has appeared in 46 games over his four years with the franchise, starting 44 of them. However, between injuries and ineffectiveness. Jones played in just six games during the 2025 season. The Bears clearly trust he can bounce back after re-signing him.

But now, Jones must get past whatever injury forced his practice to end prematurely. He was able to walk off the field under his own power, which is a good sign. But his status is murky at best until further updates are revealed.

If Jones were to miss time, Chicago may look outside the organization for help. As it stands Jedrick Wills Jr or Theo Benedet would be next in line to start.
