Charges dismissed against ex-Georgia star after pre-draft arrest

On Wednesday, criminal obstruction charges filed against Atlanta Falcons WR Zachariah Branch were dropped, per Mark Schlabach of ESPN.

Back in April, Branch was charged with misdemeanors for obstructing public sidewalks and obstructing a police officer in Athens, Georgia. Ultimately, the police were called to deal with a large crowd gathered outside a bar in the early morning hours. Branch was arrested at 1:30 am EST for failing “to comply with multiple verbal lawful commands.”

Branch’s attorney, Kim Stephens, confirmed to ESPN that prosecutors agreed to drop the charges after reviewing all the evidence.

“Zachariah cooperated fully with law enforcement and did not commit a crime on the night of his arrest and never should have been arrested,” Stephens said. “We are glad this matter is over and that Mr. Branch’s excellent reputation and good name [are] restored.”

Branch’s arrest came right before the 2026 NFL Draft and a day after playing in a spring football game for Georgia. Ultimately, Branch was selected as the No.79 pick by the Falcons in the third round.

Overall, Branch played his collegiate career at USC and Georgia. He became a first-team All-American in 2023. In 2025, Branch led the SEC with 81 conferences. Additionally, he broke Georgia’s single-season receptions record, once held by Brice Hunter, with 76.

Branch’s brother, Zion Branch, is currently a safety for Georgia.

Altogether, the Falcons selected Branch in large part for his ability to stretch the field and be an effective slot receiver, thanks to his sheer athleticism.

Additionally, he is expected to contribute to the special teams.
