Cardinals get important Masyn Winn injury update

The St. Louis Cardinals are banged up right now, as the team hopes to secure a spot in the Major League Baseball Playoffs. St. Louis is getting an important injury update Tuesday. Shortstop Masyn Winn is making progress after suffering a thumb fracture.

“Remained out of starting lineup Sept. 7, though he took swings in the batting cage and was on field pregame for infield work,” MLB.com reported.

Winn went down in late August with the injury. The team is making it a priority not to push him too hard.

“It made sense not to try to manage this,” Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol said when Winn went down, per the outlet. “Play in a game, being off a day, seeing how he comes in every day to see if the pain tolerance — like, it’s just, let’s give you the seven days, get on the other side of it and go from there.”

This season, Winn is hitting at a .238 batting average for the Cardinals. He has posted five home runs, 51 RBIs, and 10 stolen bases on the campaign.

The Cardinals are already dealing with several injuries, including to star infielder JJ Wetherholt. Wetherholt’s return is to be determined, so the team hopes Winn can return soon.

St. Louis is currently third in the National League Central, with a 72-73 record. The Cardinals are currently five games back in the National League Wild Card standings.

The Cardinals have plenty of competition though from other clubs, as they look to reach the playoffs. The Miami Marlins are currently tied with the Redbirds in the Wild Card standings. The San Diego Padres and Pittsburgh Pirates are also on the outside currently looking in.

St. Louis is in action Tuesday against the San Francisco Giants. The Redbirds have won five of their last 10 games.
