1/33 – Shortest-priced loser in British racing history beaten by Phil Foden’s horse

Najidi Storm has become the shortest-priced loser in British racing history as the colt lost at 1/33 at Goodwood.

A £1 stake on a 1/33 shot would return you just 3p profit, but Najidi Storm backers won’t have ever expected to see the biggest shock in racing on Tuesday afternoon’s novice race.

Trained by Harry Charlton, the three-year-old colt was a massive favourite under jockey Lewis Edmunds.

He won on debut at Kempton in August beating 12 rivals at 17/2 and entered this Class 3 novice against just two horses, Wreck It Ronnie (10/1) and Dream Of Albion (33/1).

But it was Wreck It Ronnie, who’s co-owned by Man City’s very own Phil Foden, who won the race to make history in British racing.

Named after Foden’s son Ronnie, the horse has ensured their names are forever etched into racing’s history books.

How did Najidi Storm 1/33 lose?

Najidi Storm went into the lead early, but within a few seconds Wreck It Ronnie took things up himself under jockey Kieren Fox.

Najidi Storm was always on the heels of the leader, whilst the 33/1 shot Dream Of Albion was never on terms with the front two.

With just over 1 furlong to go Wreck It Ronnie was three lengths ahead.

It looked like a well-time challenge with a couple of hundred yards to go, where you’d have expected any big odds-on shot to take things up and sail past a 10/1 rival.

Wreck It Ronnie going for home against the rail, meant Najidi Storm had to be quickly switched out wide to challenge.

But unfortunately for Edmunds, the horse couldn’t go close, eventually losing by a length and a half – entering this race into the history books.

Why was Najidi Storm 1/33?

Part of the colt’s heavy odds-on price was due to the lack of form by the other two horses, including by the winner Wreck It Ronnie, who certainly did wreck it for Najidi Storm.

That three-year-old trained by Charlie Pike had two previous races in his career, both at Kempton and each time finishing as many as 11 lengths behind the winner.

What could have swayed things today was the switch to turf at Goodwood from the all-weather track at Kempton, along with a step down to 1m2f.

But even with a significant improvement it seemed near impossible to be enough to beat Najidi Storm who had won on debut and looked set to continue that progression.

At 10/1, Wreck It Ronnie backers will be very smug for getting such odds in a three-runner race where all horses are yet to be seen at their best and still so early on in their careers.

Najidi Storm also boasts top pedigree being a colt by Frankel, the star sire at Banstead Manor Stud, who went 14 races unbeaten and scooping nearly £3million in prize money.

Being owned by a powerhouse such as Juddmonte also often points to more potential from horses, which can contribute a little to market support from bettors.

The Juddmonte-owned horse also had to carry a 7lb weight penalty for his previous win, but that rarely has an effect when runners are still finding their ceiling mark and escaping the handicapper.

But it was a race defined by jockey Fox, who clearly had a game plan from the start to press the favourite and push on for the win.
