Capitals’ Alex Tuch gets real on 2018 Stanley Cup Final connection
The Washington Capitals recently acquired Alex Tuch from the Buffalo Sabres, which was one of the few moves they have made this offseason. After learning he was joining the team that beat him in the 2018 Stanley Cup Final, Tuch gave a classic answer, according to Capitals beat writer Sammi Silber.
“Alex Tuch on “The Save”: “What’s the saying? If you can’t beat ’em, join ’em… that save was incredible. I talked to Holtby in the line after, he said it was the luckiest save of his life, so that made me feel a little bit better, but not really at the same time,” Silber wrote on X.
Longtime hockey fans know that Tuch was on the Vegas Golden Knights when they lost in the 2018 Stanley Cup against the Capitals. Additionally, Tuch had a chance to tie it in Game 7 against the Capitals when Braden Holtby made a miraculous save, preserving the win, and beating the Golden Knights.
Tuch also received a contract extension from the Caps, keeping him in the D.C. area for eight years. Now, he will possibly get a chance to play with Alexander Ovechkin, who is contemplating returning for one more season. Tuch has been a solid first-liner for the last few seasons, and will likely play that role unless the Caps shift him. If Ovechkin returns, he likely could play alongside him and Dylan Strome.
Tuch netted a career-best 33 goals and 66 total points in 79 games for the Sabres this past season. Now, he will get a chance to do even more while potentially playing with the greatest goal scorer in hockey history.
