Cape Verde Roberto Lopes found gig on LinkedIn

The FIFA World Cup presented a rare LinkedIn angle on Monday. But it details how Roberto Lopes found his way to Cape Verde.

Turns out social media recruiting goes on outside of college sports and pro athletes. It happens ahead of soccer’s biggest event too.

Front Office Sports pulled back the curtain on how Lopes and Cape Verde linked.

“Cabo Verde’s Roberto Lopes was recruited to play for the country from a DM on LinkedIn,” the account posted on X, formerly Twitter.

Lopes pulled off this humorous move next.

“He ignored the message because it was in Portuguese, so the team sent it again in English,” FOS shared.

Ultimately things became ironed out between the team and Lopes.

“He accepted, and just led the country to a draw against Spain in its World Cup debut,” the outlet shared.

Yes indeed, the small country that became independent from Portugal in 1975 turned heads. They delivered a draw against a renown international powerhouse on the soccer field.

Cape Verde even contained star winger Lamine Yamal to a scoreless game. Yamal kicked 16 goals for Laliga before the World Cup started. He’s one of Spain’s most beloved soccer players and one of the cup’s most aggressive scorers. But the presence of Lopes clearly impacted the 0-0 score.

Cape Verde brings a new rising star too outside of Lopes. The team also known as Tubarões Azuis watched 4o-year-old goalkeeper Vozinha protect the net at a high rate. He even denied Spain’s Mikel Oyarzabal an open header opportunity that could’ve handed the traditional soccer power the only goal of the game.
