Canadiens’ Cole Caufield points blame at himself as quiet playoffs continue

The Montreal Canadiens are down 1-0 to the Buffalo Sabres in the second round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs. They dropped the opening game 4-2 after being held to just nine shots on goal in Game 7 against the Tampa Bay Lightning. Canadiens winger Cole Caufield scored 51 goals in the regular season, but has just one so far in the Stanley Cup Playoffs. He knows that can’t continue if the Habs want to go deep.

“As a whole, not where I want it to be,” Caufield said, per NHL.com’s Mike Zeisberger. “I expect more out of myself, and my teammates do too. Just trying to get better every game and just trying to make a difference.”

“You’re not going to score every game, but obviously just want to make a difference doing other things — winning puck battles, trying to create more and playing harder in your D-zone,” Caufield continued. “Just back to those things. We had a lot more (space) last night. Felt like we generated a lot more in the O-zone, some longer shifts there, and definitely something that we could build off.”

Caufield scored on the powerplay in a Game 4 loss to the Tampa Bay Lightning. The American had two eight-game stretches with only one goal all regular season, both coming before New Year’s Day. Since the calendar flipped, Caufield has been one of the best goal scorers in the world. That has not translated to the Stanley Cup Playoffs quite yet.

The Canadiens face the Sabres in Game 2 on Friday night in Buffalo. Can Caufield find the back of the net and get the series back to Montreal tied at one?
